Sous l’œil du volcan / Under the eye of the volcano
Au sud-est de l’Indonésie, sur l’île de Java, l’immense volcan Bromo domine un désert noir peuplé de villages et de bois de pins. Protecteur ou inquiétant, les Tengger hindouistes le vénèrent, il serait la manifestation de Brahma lui-même. Dans son ombre, ils maintiennent leur culture, pris entre tradition agricole et tourisme.
Ainsi le lieu est habité par les esprits lointains et les gens d’aujourd’hui.
Puis viennent les images qui circulent et nous emmènent vers des visions improbables. Les paysages se doublent alors de leurs représentations dans l’écho de nos imaginaires.
Une série réalisée dans le cadre d’un projet en septembre 2023 avec l’Institut français le Goethe Institut à Surabaya, Indonésie et Gobelins Paris .

In the southeast of Indonesia, on the island of Java, the immense Bromo volcano dominates a black desert populated with villages and pine woods. Protective or disturbing, the Hindu Tengger revere him, he is said to be the manifestation of Brahma himself. In its shadow, they maintain their culture, caught between agricultural tradition and tourism.
Thus the place is inhabited by distant spirits and people of today.
Then come the images which circulate and take us towards improbable visions. The landscapes are then coupled with their representations in the echo of our imaginations.
